8 Essential Tips to Ensure Kids' Thrive During the School Year

The start of a new school year brings about various challenges for both parents and children, with maintaining good health ranking high on the list. As kids dive back into their schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and social engagements, it's crucial to prioritize their well-being. To help your children thrive throughout the school year, consider these eight essential tips that cover everything from nutrition to emotional support.

Fuel for Success - High-Protein Breakfasts:

Kickstart your child's day with a high-protein breakfast. A protein-rich meal can improve concentration and provide lasting energy, helping them stay focused and alert during classes. Incorporate options like organic free-range eggs, greek yogurt, organic chicken, beans, chia seed puddings, baked sweet potatoes, dinner leftovers, or even a protein-packed smoothie to ensure a balanced start.

Establish a Consistent Sleep Routine:

Adequate sleep is paramount for a child's physical and mental development. Establish a consistent sleep routine by setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time. Also trying to get sunlight on their eyes first thing in the morning to support their circadian rhythm. Movement during the day and a diet low in sugar will also promote good sleep. A well-rested child is more likely to perform better in school, manage stress effectively, and exhibit improved mood and behavior.

Foster Outdoor Time and Regular Movement:

Encourage outdoor playtime and physical activity. Regular movement not only helps kids maintain a healthy weight but also enhances their motor skills, bone strength, microbiome, and immune system. Engage in family walks, bike rides, or simply spend time in the park together.

Prioritize Family Time:

Amidst the hustle and bustle of school activities, make it a point to prioritize quality family time. Shared activities foster strong emotional connections and provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns or triumphs your child might be experiencing.

Limit Electronics Usage:

Excessive screen time can negatively impact a child's physical health, sleep quality, and even social interactions. Set clear guidelines on screen time, encouraging them to engage in alternative activities like reading, creative play, or pursuing hobbies. This can be challenging but is worthwhile for everyone.

Limit Sugary Drinks:

Swap out sugary drinks for healthier options such as filtered water, herbal teas, or electrolytes like Goodonya Hydrate Powder. Staying hydrated supports cognitive function, digestion, and overall vitality. Reducing sugar intake also contributes to maintaining a healthy weight, preventing dental issues, and a healthy immune system.

Unconditional Love and Support:

Emphasize to your child that your love is unconditional, regardless of their achievements. Academic and extracurricular pressures can be overwhelming whether your child is homeschooled or in public school, and knowing they have a supportive foundation at home can boost their self-esteem, resilience, and mental well-being.

Tailored Immune Support - Individualized Supplementation:

The reality is that with increased exposure to germs at school, kids will get sick! This does not mean their immune system is not working. However, supporting the foundations of health and supplementation can help kids handle upper respiratory infections, strep throat, stomach bug, etc. better with decreased severity and duration of symptoms.

Some of my favorite supplements to support the immune system include:

  • Needed Immune Support: safe for kids 6 months+

  • Douglas Labs Vita Kids Immune

  • Orthomolecular Liquid Vitamin D3/K2

  • Global Healing Center Zinc

  • Tasha Rose Herbs Elderberry: Code DRM gives 15% off

All of the above supplements except the elderberry syrup can be purchased from our online dispensary, Fullscript, at 15% off. No code needed.

Consult a healthcare professional to determine whether specific supplements are necessary based on their dietary habits, health status, and any potential deficiencies.

As the school year unfolds, remember that a holistic approach to your child's well-being encompasses their physical, mental, and emotional health. By implementing these eight tips – from providing a nourishing breakfast to fostering emotional connections – you can set the stage for a successful and healthy academic year. Prioritizing your child's health not only ensures their current well-being but also equips them with valuable habits that will benefit them for a lifetime!
